These Uncertain, Changing Times

Notebook header. An open notebook with dotted grid paper shows a mess of sketches such as: Cocktail Drinkynums with 2 oz. blue liquid, 2 oz. white rum, and 1 oz. purple stuff; shotglass, martini glass, and lowball glass; a self portrait sketch; ideas for airflow and presentation; confetti treats for angel food, cookies, frosting, cupcakes, and coffee. On the second page, there is a calendar for Aug 1 pink drink, Aug 15 yellow cookies, Sep 1 angel Bundt cake, Sept 15 pearl drop smoothie, Oct 1 autumn salad, Oct 15 pumpkin crap, Nov 1 marshmallow gelatin, Nov 15 turkey pate. Below that is a shaker with notes for powdered sugar, corn starch, baking powder, and baking soda.

As you’re probably very well aware by now, the COVID-19 pandemic is overtaking the world. Grocery stores are being raided every day and supplies are frequently out of stock. As an essential employee, I’m caught up in this mess. Some days I can’t find what I need, other days I can’t be bothered to push through the fatigue. This is affecting my projects.

I’m not ending Brainpie. I have every intention of finishing The Draco Trilogy and posting more recipes. But with the changing times, getting ingredients is kind of tricky. (I had no idea whole wheat flour was popular in my area until last week.) Services and industries we’ve taken for granted may shut down during this event. Rumor has it that the USPS may temporarily halt. I’ll believe it when I see an actual news source. But anything can happen. Look at what this virus is doing.

I’ll be changing a few things for Brainpie. As far as Draco is concerned, I’ll be working on it behind the scenes, cooking for each chapter when possible (when ingredients are available), and posting it as a weekly batch once everything is finished. If it starts posting in the summer, great. If it start posting in December, also great.

I may post a small recipe every now and then. The birthday post is currently in the works. Truth be told, I’m kind of looking forward more to doing random recipes than continuing Draco. They’re quicker to write and I do get a chance to revisit Ruth Ellen Church.

It would be a joy to plunge into the comforting world of comfort food.

See you next time. Stay safe.

And stay the fuck out of those stores if you don’t need to go.
